In total, the Marr Fund has now raised more than $2.4 million to fuel Alzheimer’s prevention research. This critical funding has already been put to good use, enabling BWH to develop a special procedure for measuring amyloid protein in blood, a potential indicator of cognitive decline. The fund has also allowed BWH to launch an observational study in individuals ranging from 50-65 years of age who do not yet show elevated levels of amyloid plaque in their brains but are at risk for Alzheimer’s due to family history or other reasons. “This work doesn’t get done without philanthropists like the Marrs,” said Dennis Selkoe, MD, co-director of the Ann Romney Center for Neurological Diseases at BWH. “I’ve never been this excited and hopeful about Alzheimer’s research.” Those who supported the Marr Fund in the Maine Marathon were treated to a post-run BBQ at the home of John and Josephine Marr, where a crowd of multi-generational participants celebrated their fundraising success and the early progress it has made possible. According to Mary Psyhogeos, one of the Marr grandchildren, “Because Alzheimer’s is a genetic illness, many members of my family are at risk for it. While a cure now will not benefit my grandmother, it will hopefully prevent this disease from affecting people in my parents’ and my generation.” To make a gift to the Marr Marathon Team, visit CrowdRise.com/2016MaineMarathon.
