On April 21, 122 runners participated in the 2014 Boston Marathon in support of life-giving breakthroughs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).
Among them were 14 running enthusiasts who brought their passion, energy, and determination to the 26.2-mile journey in support of the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Fund. The group consisted of beloved Reny family members and friends, many of whom were on or near the course when the bombs exploded in 2013, and two BWH doctors: Christian Sampson, MD, a BWH surgeon who treated Gillian, and Charles Schumacher, MD, who was a second-year BWH resident at the time of the tragedy.
Watch Stepping Strong runners cross the finish line in unison.
“I ran the 2014 Boston Marathon for Gillian—my baby sister, my best friend, and my greatest gift. I ran for the community of supporters, survivors, responders, doctors, and nurses who saved our family in myriad ways. And I ran to finally cross that finish line in 2014 with the conviction that there is so much good in this world.” —Danielle Reny
The Stepping Strong Fund will fuel cutting-edge research and clinical programs in trauma healing and limb reconstruction.
In Their Own Words
"Watching my niece Gillian tackle extreme and unexpected physical challenges with such determination and grace has inspired me to run my first marathon in her honor. Last year, I saw that heroes exist in everyday life. I run this race to enable those heroes to heal others as miraculously as they did my family." —Jennifer Epstein
“I'm motivated by the resilience of the people who stood with me and by me at the finish line a year ago; loved ones whose bones were broken but whose spirits remained unwavering.” —Kyle Larrow
“I ran the Boston Marathon twice before, both times with my dear friend Audrey by my side. I thought my 26.2-mile Mondays were a thing of the past but have committed to run again this year—in honor of our friendship, in support of Gillian, and to reaffirm what the marathon truly stands for.” —Carroll Pierce
