Repeatedly named among the top hospitals in the nation for Gynecology by U.S. News & World Report, Brigham and Women's Hospital provides complete gynecologic care and some of the most advanced treatments available. Our rich history has established us as worldwide leader in the care of women.
The Division of Global Obstetrics and Gynecological Health makes women’s health a priority, and we’re committed to improving the quality of care that women receive. A major way we do this is by developing long-term relationships with reproductive health centers and hospitals in developing nations. Through these partnerships we hope to advance safe motherhood by reducing postpartum hemorrhaging and fistula formation, promoting awareness of and access to contraception, diagnosing and treating sexually transmitted infections, encouraging the elimination of female genital cutting and help train providers in evidence-based medicine.
The future leaders of our obstetric and gynecology (OB/GYN) program help put these plans into action. OB/GYN third-year residents volunteer for an international, six-week rotation at medical facilities for underserved populations around the world. The goal of this program is to develop the global consciousness of a group of our residents and give them the opportunity to broaden their scope of learning. In 2013 residents focused their work in Africa, each one addressing a different aspect of OB/GYN. Residents traveled to hospitals and medical centers in Senegal, Malawi, and Uganda and to help with such things as:
- reproductive health
- augmenting family planning services
- promoting education and awareness for cervical cancer
- providing care and creating preventive programs for cervical cancer
- working with practitioners to improve procedures
- data analysis to improve surgical outcomes
- expanding the local and national capacity of providers
Our faculty members and researchers are dedicated to doing everything possible to provide underserved women with personalized OB/GYN care—wherever they are.
