Celebrating Richard A. Smith

Richard Smith

Brigham and Women’s Hospital mourns the passing of a dear friend and benefactor, Richard A. “Dick” Smith (1924-2020). Dick was an exceptional business leader and philanthropist who made an indelible impact throughout the Boston community and beyond. He was deeply valued for his extraordinary wisdom, generosity, and kindness, as well as his ability to lead by example and inspire others to make the world a better place.

Dick leaves a remarkable legacy of dedication to improving the human condition, a commitment that he and his beloved wife, Susan, instilled in their family. Among their many notable contributions that span healthcare, education, and other important causes, Dick and his family made a transformative gift to the Brigham in support of our Newborn Intensive Care Unit. We are honored to be one of the institutions that the Smiths entrust with their philanthropy, and privileged to carry out their vision for ensuring that vulnerable newborns and their loved ones receive the very best care possible now and for generations to come in the Richard and Susan Smith Family Foundation Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

Our hearts go out to Dick’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. While he will be truly missed by so many, we take comfort in celebrating his wonderful life and in knowing what a difference he made to others.
