“The first 1,000 days represents a unique opportunity to set a child’s health on a positive course,” says Mandy Belfort, MD, MPH, neonatologist and associate chief of research in the Department of Pediatrics. “Preterm babies need more nutrition than full-term babies because they’re at an earlier stage of development.”

At Mass General Brigham for Children, Dr. Belfort studies early-life nutrition and its impact on long-term health and development. Her research tracking preterm infants from the NICU through age 5 is already showing how enhanced nutrition in their earliest days improves long-term health for these children.
