Why We Run

Standing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, Gillian Reny’s life changed forever. A senseless act of violence left her with traumatic injuries, but the efforts of a multidisciplinary medical team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital saved her life and legs. In gratitude, her family established The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation, where today, Gillian’s strength drives a relentless pursuit to transform how we prevent, treat, and recover from traumatic injury, the leading cause of death for people ages 44 and younger in the United States.

The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation

A moving portrait of Boston Marathon survivor Gillian Reny’s journey—from the day of the tragedy, to her family’s decision to give back to the medical heroes who saved her life and limbs, to their deeply personal commitment to transform outcomes for all patients who suffer from traumatic injuries and events.

What We Support

The mission of The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation is to catalyze trauma innovation for injured civilians and military heroes through multidisciplinary investigative collaborations across the continuum of trauma care, from prevention to treatment and recovery.

Trauma is often referred to as the neglected global epidemic of modern society, accounting for 40 million emergency department visits and an economic burden of $4 trillion in 2020. It is the number one cause of death for people 44 or younger, ahead of cancer and heart disease. When you support someone running for Stepping Strong, you are helping turn tragedy into hope for civilian and military heroes worldwide who have suffered devastating traumatic injuries.
