$2.5 million gift creates endowed chair in medical education

Inspired by leaders who have shaped the Internal Medicine Residency into one of the highest regarded training programs in the country, a donor family has given $2.5 million to the Brigham. Over the past four decades, these longtime champions of medical education and mentorship have witnessed the growth and prestige of the residency under the guidance of Marshall A. Wolf, MD, Joel Katz, MD, and Maria Yialamas, MD.
Wolf served as program director of the residency program for 28 years, followed by Katz, who led the program for 21 years. Today, Maria Yialamas, MD, leads the residency, which is known for outstanding clinical training, individually tailored career mentoring, and flexible training pathways. Combined, these physicians have made an indelible impact on preparing thousands of exceptional clinicians and leaders.
With their generosity, these donors are supporting a gifted educator in Dr. Carl Pallais. He works tirelessly to help our residents grow and become future leaders in medicine.

“There’s a spirit of inquiry and innovation in the residency,” says Yialamas. “The faculty are extremely committed to providing trainees the best opportunities. With their generosity, these donors are supporting a gifted educator in Dr. Carl Pallais. He works tirelessly to help our residents grow and become future leaders in medicine. I can think of no one more deserving.”
Carl Pallais, MD, MPH, the master clinician in Endocrinology and co-director of the Center for Endocrine Genetics, serves as a senior associate program director of the residency team alongside Yialamas. Recognizing his longtime dedication to education and mentorship, Pallais has been selected as the inaugural incumbent of a new endowed chair in medical education. Appointment to an endowed chair is among the highest honors the Brigham can provide and offers sustainable, long-term support that enables incumbents and their successors to carry out their life-changing work.
“It’s an immense privilege to serve in this chair position and carry forward our educational initiatives,” Pallais says. “Our rigorous training, focus on clinical excellence, and emphasis on humanism—both in our approach to patient care and to each other—inspires our work every day, and I’m grateful for this opportunity.”
