About cardiac amyloidosis

Inspiration

Sean’s father, legendary Boston Globe columnist Will McDonough, died suddenly of cardiac amyloidosis in 2003. This special celebrity charity event supports cardiac amyloidosis research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Impact of Philanthropy

Brigham and Women’s Hospital established its Cardiac Amyloidosis Program to fill a significant void in the diagnosis and treatment of systemic amyloidosis. The program aims to better understand cardiac amyloidosis in order to inform and improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for patients living with the disease.

Cardiac amyloidosis is caused by deposits of abnormal proteins, or amyloid, in the heart. It causes the heart to become stiff, making it difficult to work properly. Although this is still a relatively rare disease, there is growing evidence that it may be more common than once thought.

Fueled by philanthropy, the team is mentoring the next generation while making great strides in diagnosing and treating cardiac amyloidosis. With advances in technology, imaging techniques, and clinical expertise, the team can now diagnose the disease earlier in its progression. With earlier diagnoses, improved therapies, and more widespread recognition, an increasing number of patients can manage cardiac amyloidosis as a chronic condition instead of a life-threatening disease.
