Thea Stoneman Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center elevates care
The Brigham community gathered in September to celebrate the Thea Stoneman Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center at the Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) campus. The center enables experts in breast imaging to offer patients advanced, personalized services and to build on a decades-long reputation for excellence in breast healthcare.
With a $3 million commitment for the center through the James M. Stoneman Charitable Fund, the Stoneman family is continuing their long-standing generous support. Thea and her late husband, James, contributed to several initiatives, including establishing the Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park, the expansive, welcoming entrance on the Brigham’s main campus.
Seeing the center was impressive. It has the newest equipment, and the staff are so passionate and knowledgeable.
“Jim liked to focus charitable giving on medicine and education, and this carries on his wishes,” Thea explains.
The gift also supports an area personally meaningful to Thea, who overcame breast cancer. She says, “Seeing the center was impressive. It has the newest equipment, and the staff are so passionate and knowledgeable.”
Dylan Kwait, MD, chief of radiology at BWFH and interim division chief of breast imaging at the Brigham, led Thea and her family on a tour of the modern, airy space, which provides sweeping views of the Arnold Arboretum, soothing artwork, and increased privacy as patients ready for exams. He drew attention to screening and diagnostic technology that enhances care for their nearly 100 patients daily, such as advanced mammography and sonography equipment and a bone density scanner.

Of major significance is the specialized contrast-enhanced mammography unit—the only one of its kind across the Brigham.
“This space was meticulously designed,” says Kwait. “The Stoneman Center is an extraordinary place to care for patients and an incredible resource for our community.”
Before Thea cut the ceremonial ribbon dedicating the center, Robert S.D. Higgins, MD, MSHA, shared immense gratitude on behalf of the hospital. “We’re so proud to have your name woven throughout the fabric of the Brigham,” said Higgins, former Brigham president and Mass General Brigham executive vice president. “Your philanthropy continues to transform our hospital’s environment and promote health and well-being for patients and their loved ones.”
